Pass Plus

However, driving instructors also provide additional teaching after passing your driving test. The Pass Plus certificate is an advanced driving course which includes night-time and motorway driving to give young drivers experience in a greater number of driving conditions.

Owning a Pass Plus certificate can significantly reduce car insurance premiums for young drivers - often by up to 35%. The scheme includes six hours of extra driving, in built-up areas, night-time and in testing weather conditions.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has noted that a number of young drivers who Pass Plus their driving tests actually have limited experience on the whole despite learning how to physically drive.

Nigel Harries, Deputy Head of the DSA examiner, commented: "A number of municipalities recognize the benefits of Pass Plus and support in relation to the promotion and discounts."

Newly qualified drivers can take the scheme within 12 months of passing their driving test. While your own driving instructor may be willing to take you on to complete the scheme, numerous other driving schools nationwide are also available.

The cost of the Pass Plus scheme is similar to the hourly rate of a regular driving lesson. The confidence gained and money saved on young car insurance means Pass Plus certificates are a must-have to keep costs down for young drivers.

Passing your driving test does not mean you cannot improve as a driver. Consider this driving scheme to make you more attractive to car insurers, giving you greater self-confidence in the process - and put the money saved on your car insurance to good use!
